Ms Julie Watson

Julie has been a practicing speech pathologist since graduating from UQ in 2005, starting here at the Gold Coast in private practice and at the Gold Coast Hospital. Her early years of practice were spread across the lifespan in a variety of settings, including early years language and articulation, school-aged and pre-school aged language and literacy, dysphagia management for nursing home residents, rehabilitation and voice disorders for outpatients, and acute medical care.

Julie developed more specialist skills as a voice therapist, working with adults with disordered voices at the Gold Coast and then at Charing Cross Hospital, London. She also worked in a highly specialist position working with transgender voice clients in the UK, and has continued to support other clinicians to assess and understand voice and the role that voice plays on a person’s identity.

Julie has worked extensively with school-aged children and adolescents and their families, working in secondary schools in London for several years, and then returning to Australia to work in Child and Youth Mental Health Services, where she has been for over 10 years.  She has highly specialist skills of working with co-morbid communication disorders and mental health disorders, and has provided speech pathology and case-management for young people needing support for mental health disorders and communication deficits. She has supported university students to continue to develop their clinical practice skills for over 10 years as well.

Julie has special interest in voice disorders, supporting mental health and behavioural concerns, social language and narrative, and enjoys working with all age groups.
